Cookie settings
Annotate stores a small amount of data in your browser. Some of it is needed for the site to work. The rest is analytics, which stays off until you turn it on.
This page covers cookies and other browser storage — localStorage and IndexedDB — together, because the same rules apply to all of them. For everything else about your data, see the privacy policy.
Your settings
Necessary
Always onKeeps you signed in, remembers your choices on this page, and attributes comments you leave on unlisted links. The site doesn't work without it.
Analytics
Off by defaultCounts pages viewed and features used, with device type, browser, and approximate location derived from your IP address. Runs Google Analytics for Firebase. Nothing loads until you turn this on.
Your choice applies to this browser only. It is kept for 12 months, then we ask again.
What we store
Necessary
| Name | Type | Set by | What it does | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
firebaseLocalStorageDb | IndexedDB | Firebase Authentication | Keeps you signed in | Until you sign out |
annotate_consent | localStorage | Annotate | Remembers your choice on this page | 12 months |
Analytics
Set only after you accept analytics.
| Name | Type | Set by | What it does | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Cookie | Google Analytics for Firebase | Distinguishes one browser from another and keeps session state | 2 years |
Google keeps the event data these cookies send for 14 months, and user data for 15 months. Google processes it under the Google Analytics terms and the Google Privacy Policy.
Checkout
When you open checkout, Paddle loads its own script and may set its own cookies to process the payment and prevent fraud. Paddle is the merchant of record and controls that data under the Paddle privacy policy. These cookies are set only on checkout.
What we don't use
- Advertising or retargeting cookies
- Social media pixels
- Session recording or heatmaps
- Cross-site tracking of any kind
Changing your choice
- On this page. Change the toggle and save. If you turn analytics off, the
_gacookies are deleted and no more events are sent. Events already sent stay with Google until the retention period ends. - In your browser. You can block or delete cookies and site data in your browser settings. Blocking necessary storage signs you out and breaks commenting on unlisted links.
- Across Google sites. Use the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
Changes to this page
When we add or remove anything in the tables above, we update this page and the date at the top. If we add a new category, we ask for your consent again.
